Belsazar

Digital Stage Design 1999

The stage design for the opera Belsazar (by Georg Friedrich Handel) was produced in collaboration with Fabrizio Plessi and the Academy of Media Arts in 1998. The production and post-production of the video sequences was executed in collaboration with Paolo Atzori and Ruth Baetig.

The continuous video images of this three-channel work are projected onto a 9 x 1 metre table filled with a white metallic liquid. The audience is seated around this table, while the opera singers, dancers and the orchestra’s performance takes place around and at the head of it. Video projections of roses, sand, fire, cloth—and even soap bubbles—accompany selected scenes of the performance.

The opera was first performed in Düsseldorf at the Regierungspräsidium, as part of the Alstadt Herbst festival in 1998, and again in Amsterdam as part of a North Rhine-Westphalia cultural exchange program in 1999.
